Opening on May 22
The 33rd Barcelona International Women's Film Festival arrives in May. Vol. I will take place between May 22 and July 18.
A total of 55 films: 21 feature films and 34 short films. Under the edition's theme, "In the Company of Strangers," they champion cinema that explains the world beyond the abyss, that everything and the hostility of the times we live in summon images that emphasize desire, not fear.
This year, the festival opens on May 22, at the Filmoteca de Catalunya with the screening of the Catalan premiere of the multi-award-winning film Shahid (2024) at the Berlinale. Its director, Narges Kalhor, had previously directed films openly critical of the Iranian regime, which led to her exile in Germany in 2009. Shahid is a new hybrid, extravagant, and unconventional project that documents the director's process of changing her surname as an act of identity reaffirmation.
The 33rd edition of the Barcelona International Women's Film Festival (MIFDB) takes place around two periods of the year: Vol. I, which begins now. This part of the program includes the following sections: Filmic Persistences, Sarah Maldoror Retrospective, Cinema Out of Place, Family Sessions, Special Sessions, Educational Activities, and The Film Festival on Filmin. Vol. II will take place in the fall.
