In this two areas of the Sant Martí district neighbourhoods there are a great variety of locations which combine the maritime atmosphere and the green of its large parks with modern and contemporary buildings.

Vila Olímpica and Diagonal Mar-Front Marítim are two of the maritime neighbourhoods that make up Sant Martí’s District of Barcelona, that together with the 3rd beigbourhood El Poblenou, gather on its 2.675 meters of coastline most of the city beaches: Nova Icària, Bogatell, Mar Bella, Nova Mar Bella and Llevant.

Both neighbourhoods have been renovated through two very different international events. Fisrt, the Vila Olímpica was built in 1992 for the Olympics, initially as a residence for athletes participating in the games but later, transformed into a residential area.

Diagonal Mar is a neighbourhood that appeared between the 60’s and 70’s with the construction of its first houses in an area where there were only fields. In 2004 the district underwent a deep change to hold the Universal Forum of Cultures. After this event, the City Council turned it into a complete residential area.

These urban operation meant the creation of green areas like the Port Olímpic Park, the Nova Icària Park or the Diagonal Mar Park, the largest one in Barcelona with an area of 14ha, and buildings that have become iconic as the Forum Building, Frank O.Gehry’s fish, the Mapfre tower, the Hotel Arts, the Diagonal Zero Zero tower (Telefónica building) and recreational areas such as the Olympic Port.
