Serielizados Fest: "The audience is increasing its interest for the European series

02/24/2017

We interviewed Víctor Sala and Betu Martínez, directors of Serielizados Fest, the International Series Festival of Barcelona. Its fourth edition is going to take place from 19th to 22nd April 2017 at the Contemporary Culture Center of Barcelona - CCCB and other venues in the city.

- The upcoming fourth edition of Serielizados Fest has increased the capacity of its venue, chosing the CCCB as the headquarters for the event. Towards which direction is going the the booming series phenomenon?

The desire to devour series is increasing. And nowadays devouring European series is becoming a phenomenon. It is important to mention the fact that we can identify ourselves more easily with the characters and problems, because they fit better with our reality. Fortunately, the video on demand platforms and some channels are increasingly embracing more European fiction. This edition of the festival does not want to be left behind European series and this year we come closer to the European reality. We hope that people will be interested.

- The Serielizados Fest has just advanced a little part of its line up. What activities do should not to miss?

One of the best series of this past year was undoubtedly The Young Pope. (It is important to mention here that it has also Catalan production, with Mediapro behind!). A rarity author series has left us all spellbound. One of the most curious is the script of the series. Therefore, we wanted to invite Tony Grisoni, co-writer of the series, also responible for Southcliffe or the movies he has written together with Terry Gilliam (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Tideland and The Man Who Killed Don Quixote).

On the national scene, one of the sensations of this year has been Muerte en León, a journalistic and rigorous non-fiction project that faces the reality such as Making A Murderer, The Jinx or O.J. Made in America.

And another new feature of this edition will be a series homage. 2017 will be remembered for the return of Twin Peaks 25 and the festival will turn Barcelona's Sala Hiroshima into an homage to David Lynch and Mark Frost.

- You just came back from Berlin, after having participating at the Berlinale. This is a good example of a major film festival that has opened its programme to series. What has been your experience in the Drama Series Days?

Going to the Berlinale or to the Göteborg TV Festival (1st and 2nd February) helps us to look at what new series are being cooked in northern Europe. As a International Series Festival of Barcelona, we believe that we have to take into account what's happening in our continent. In this regard, there is already a network of film festivals sections very focused on the series industry and encouraging co-production between countries, as well as theSéries Mania Festival in Paris or Edinburgh or Copenhagen. Being at the Drama Series or at Göteborg TV Festival serves us to see what will come and also wich trends. It also allows us to begin making contacts and collaborations in order to raise the connections between the north and south.

- What are the best series shot in Barcelona, according to your opinion?

The first season of one of the best European series in recent years, Gomorra, had Barcelona as one of its stages. A series about mafia and drug trafficking it may not give the best image of the city, but if we talk about "best series shot in Barcelona," Gomorra is a perfect example.

Internationally Emerald City, a 2017 NBC series was filmed in the Park Guell recreating the Land of Oz. The series doesn't seem to us very interesting, but the fusion of Gaudí architecture and the  Wizard of Oz's aesthetics is at least noteworthy.

Regarding other local series, we want to highlight two series of Pau Freixas. Cites, based on the BBC's Dates and Sé quién eres, a noir produced by Filmax and broadcast on Telecinco. One of the most current amazing Spanish series with an interesting and different distribution, HBO in Spain and BBC4 in the UK.
