Sustainability workshop
During January and part of February, the Barcelona Film Commission participated in the first edition of the Green Production Lab organized by Torino Film Lab. The workshop was aimed at both sustainability professionals and film producers to create a practical space for collaboration between the two sectors.
The in-person part of the workshop took place in El Prat, a city close to Barcelona, over five days between 28 January and 1 February. Participants could attend lectures by sustainability experts working with the film industry and develop a coherent plan for each production. The group selected four sustainability professionals for each of the productions (a total of three).
During the first two days, participants followed the lectures and developed a sustainability strategy to present to the producers. The groups designed a sustainability strategy. After carefully analyzing the script and the available funding, they estimate the project's impact hotspots, mainly transport, accommodation, meals, energy, and equipment. The groups take into account social practices and the internal dynamics of the team in a complementary manner.
On the third day, the sustainability strategy was presented to the producers of each team to make initial joint assessments and to evaluate the possibility of certifying the production in question with a recognized seal.
The remaining days were dedicated to developing the sustainability plan in more depth, calculating the carbon footprint, and presenting the progress to the rest of the groups.
It has been a good experience to better understand the needs around sustainability from the view of the producers and to go deeper into the steps to follow for the development and implementation of a sustainability plan.
