Poblenou is a neighbourhood located at Sant Martí district with a great variety of locations which combines factory buildings from its industrial past with modern and contemporary buildings. Up to 1897 the old town, Sant Martí de Provençals, extended from the old walls to the River Besòs and from the Carmel Mountain to the Mediterranean Sea. From this date the town was added to the city.
The district of Sant Martí hosts in the same area the past and the future of Barcelona. This combination is especially reflected in the transformation of the old industrial Poblenou into the new 22@ technology neighbourhood, creating a zone that mixes factories as Farinera de Sant Jaume, Gal i Puigsech, Ca l’Illa and Can Gili and some refurbished as Fàbrica l’Escocesa, Ca l’Aranyó or the Oliva Artés; with contemporary buildings like Agbar tower, Media Tic, Disseny-Hub, the Biomedical Research Park and other spaces like the Diagonal Mar Park, Josep Antoni Coderch Square or the Santiago Pey Square.
