The Royal Catalan Academy of Fine arts of Saint George was created as Provincial Academy of Fine arts in 1849 in order to direct the artistic education and to be a consultative organ of the government in the artistic matters of the province.
At present, detached already from the education, there preserves an important art, cardinal heritage to understand the history of the modern Catalan art, which comes from the bottom generated by the Art school of Barcelona -installed in 2 º floor of the building of the Llotja from 1771 until the 70s of the XX century- and from the collection that the own Academy generated from the contributions of the academicians. It is a historical space that there preserves the style started to the building in the different reforms realized in the XVIIIth and XIXth century.
His collection is considered the first museum of art that existed in Barcelona. There are 7 visitables rooms that keep the nineteenth-century spirit and about 350 works of art are exposed, between paintings, sculptures, engravings, drawings and ceramic pieces.
