The origin of the convent of Sant Domènec can be found in the will of Ermengol X, dated 1314, in which the foundation of a Dominican convent was arranged as well as the purchase of all the clothing necessary to accommodate the religious community. However, the works did not begin until 1323.
Due to its location, it has been a very vulnerable space to the effects of sieges and wars that the city of Balaguer has suffered over time. In fact, the construction preserves the vestiges of these conflicts: the current facade does not correspond to the original, it is simply a wall that closes off the space. This is due to the destruction that the church suffered during the War of Succession, when the four chapels at the foot of the church disappeared, as well as the facade and one of the cloisters.
The church is Gothic in style, with a single nave and a seven-sided polygonal apse covered with cross vaults. The double-sided roof rests on diaphragm arches, typical of Catalan Gothic architecture.
As for the cloister, it seems that originally there would have been two: the Expansion and the Retreat, the latter currently missing. What is preserved is made up of four galleries, with slender columns, pointed arches and interior trilobed opening. The central courtyard has a buried cistern from where the convent was supplied with water.
