1889. The industrial revolution disturbs the tranquillity of rural Catalonia with the arrival of the train. Oleguer, with the wave of progress, settles in the village of Pratbell to open a business, but his dark and miserly behaviour immediately turns the whole village against him. It is not the eagerness to earn money that frightens its inhabitants most, but the strange relationship he has with coins. He takes care of them, speaks to them and sleeps with them. They know him as the Poor Strangler. Cileta, a young and curious peasant woman, refuses to believe all the legends about Oleguer, and will enter the darkness of her business, little by little seduced by the brightness of money.
