Situated in the heart of the Pre-Pyrenean region, this municipality takes its name from one of the most outstanding Romanesque castles conserved today in Catalonia: an 11th-century architectural site containing Mur Castle and the Canonical Church of Santa Maria. The castle, perched on a hilltop, commands magnificent views over Pallars Jussà County, particularly the spectacular Serra del Montsec mountains and the Terradets reservoir.

Nearby, El Meüll, Collmorter, Santa Llúcia, Puigmaçana, Guàrdia de Noguera and Vilamolat de Mur are some of the tiny traditional villages, still inhabited, that maintain their original character. Others, such as Cellers, overlook the Terradets reservoir and are mirrored in its waters, surrounded by rushes and riverside vegetation.
