Sant Gregori Castle is a 14th-century fortified manor house that was the home of the Margarit family, originally from Girona. The Margarits were knights entitled to bear heraldic arms, and prominent family members include Joan de Margarit y de Paz, Bishop of Girona and Cardinal of Rome. The castle, which contains one of the largest interior courtyards in Catalonia, incorporates elements of Catalan civil Gothic architecture with modifications popular in the 14th, 16th, and 17th centuries. Square in plan, this type of building is characterized by the corner tower, the defensive wall, and the outbuildings around the interior courtyard, typical of 12th-century stately homes. The estate, covering more than 6 hectares, is located in Sant Gregori, in the Llèmena Valley (Gironès), in a dreamlike setting.
