Berguedà

L’Alt Berguedà is a county in northern Catalonia, nestling in the Pyrenees, just over 100 kilometres by road from Barcelona. This is a land of contrasts combining spectacular natural beauty with the heritage left by transhumant shepherds and the old mining industry.

These valleys, historical sites of transhumance and Romanesque architecture, were also where the industrialisation process began in Catalonia. Unlike other Pyrenean sites, here, the Llobregat Valley permitted reasonably easy access to the very heart of the Serralada de L’Alt Berguedà mountains. As a result, the landscape we see today is formed by an unusual blend of mountains, small rural townships, medieval heritage and remains from the industrial past.

In this area of the Pyrenees, it is still possible to visit the old coal and oil mines, as well as to enjoy views over the light-filled horizon stretching away into the distance from such great peaks as Pedraforca and Cadí. The Llobregat Valley is a land of high mountains, of cold and snow in winter, of warm autumns, of sunny summers and of fruitful spring seasons.
