Plaça Reial is one of the most distinguished squares in Barcelona. To get there, walk down the Rambla from Plaça de Catalunya and turn into Carrer de Ferran. There, opening up before you on your right, is the square, very traditional and interesting for its style and design and for the life which goes on there.

It has always been a very popular square, right from its beginnings in the mid-19th century. Here locals and foreigners mix and meet, to enjoy the sun or have something to drink in one of the bars under the porches which are so characteristic of the square. At night, the clubs and bars there are also very lively.

The rectangular Plaça Reial, which has been through many renovations, is on the plot of the old Capuchin monastery, and was designed in 1848 by the architect and urban planner Francesc Daniel Molina. Round the perimeter of the plaza there are royal palms, in the centre there is a fountain called the Font de les Tres Gràcies, and there are two lampposts which are the work of the young Antoni Gaudí.

In 1977, it was twinned with Plaça Garibaldi in Mexico City, and here they also hold festivals of mariachi music.
