The Benedictine monastery of Sant Joan les Fonts, also known as the priory of Sant Esteve, was consecrated in 1117. A community of monks lived here in the medieval period, under the Abbey of St. Víctor of Marseilles. In the 15th century it came under the influence of the monastery of St. Pere of Besalú; from the late 15th century until the 19th century it was under the rule of the monastery of Sant Pere of Camprodon.

Today, all that remains of the original monastic complex is the church, declared National Monument in 1981. Inside you can see a permanent exhibition about the history of the monument.
