17th century. It tells the tale of a monk, Ambrosio, who was left at a monastery door as a baby, taken in and brought up by the Capuchin friars. By the age of thirty, he has become an unrivalled preacher admired by one and all, and bitterly envied by some, for his eloquence and fervour. As severe with himself as he is with others, he often prefers his own company to that of his fellow men. As the story unfolds, this upstanding man with a reputation for uncompromising righteousness, commit acts he could never have dreamed of a short time before, and he sinks from being a hero-worshipped preacher to a common criminal, accused by the Court of Inquisition of making a pact with the Devil.
